Under-sink waste disposers offer great convenience to those on main drainage but are not suitable for septic tanks. Raw organic matter causes the microbial balance of septic tank to be upset and they will not only work inefficiently but bad odours can also be created.
There is a great deal of choice from a number of manufacturers and suppliers but the old adage of: ‘buy cheap, buy expensive’ was never more true than here. The cost of replacing a faulty waste disposer is far more than that of the unit. It has to be installed by a plumber and cause considerable disruption in the kitchen.
Make sure that you buy a waste disposer powerful enough for your needs. Cheap usually means less effective. Cheaper models may struggle with onion skins, pits or small bones. An ineffective waste disposer can cause messy and unpleasant problems and is a waste of money.
A 1/2 HP (half-horsepower) heavy duty model with stainless steel components should suffice but a 3/4 HP model is better. Sound insulation will reduce the noise (which can be considerable, especially in cheaper models). Look for a five year warranty for peace of mind.
Buy wisely.
