Seven Steps to Plan Your Kitchen Lighting

Step One
Plan to allow as much natural light into your kitchen as possible. Natural light is the best kind of light, providing different accents and moods at various times of the day.

Step Two
View the light in your kitchen at various times of day. Be sure to position your blinds or drapes as they will be at the different times of the day.

Step Three
Consider your main, ambient lighting. You will probably want the main overhead light to be bright and cheery.

Step Four
Task lighting is particularly important in a kitchen. Ensure that food-preparation areas will be adequately illuminated.

Step Five
Take note of shadowed areas in the room that may need to be illuminated. For example, if you have a small area in your kitchen for homework, paying bills, etc., and the area does not receive light when you typically use it, consider installing an overhead light or desk lamp.

Step Six
You may enjoy having a feature light over a table if you eat in or adjacent to the kitchen. This might be a chandelier (traditional or modern). Kitchens can become very warm during food preparation and a ceiling fan that combines a light fitting can both illuminate the table and help keep everyone comfortable during a meal.

Step Seven
Consider the use of pendant lighting over an island or servery. It provides great focused lighting for a work area and can be very stylish.
