Microwave Ovens

Only 30 years ago most people would not have known what to do with a microwave, now they are a kitchen essential. They come in various guises including Grill microwaves and Oven microwaves.

Microwave ovens work by emitting high frequency radio waves that excite the water molecules in food, causing them to collide with each other and generate heat. Microwave radiation only penetrates the first inch or so of the food after which heat is transferred by conduction. Uneven heating of food is common with hot spots and cold spots in the dish. Therefore it is advisable to stir the food periodically to distribute the heat more evenly.

Microwaves do take up a lot of bench space if that is where they are placed. Far better to plan a space for them in one of the cabinets either over or under the bench. Most microwaves can be housed in an opening or 600 mm W X 350 mm H but do be mindful of the installation requirements of the model of your choice.

Important Safety Note

Microwave ovens are a potential source of dangerous radiation in the home. Microwave radiation have been implicated as a cause of cancer.

When operating properly the dangerous emissions are safely contained within the appliance. However, damage to the door or door locking mechanism could cause the seal to leak and therefore radiation to leak out

Microwaves should be tested periodically for radiation leakage and always tested after an accident or damage to the door.
