If it seems too cheap to be true, it probably is. If the 'brand' is unfamiliar and seems a bit dodgy, it probably is. You can do some research though - Google the 'brand' name and see what comes up. No results means the name was probably dreamed up over a beer (or rice wine). It will last as long as the dodgy enterprise it serves.
Trademe helps of course. You don't need a showroom, you don't need an office, a phone, customer service, any kind of organisation or even a genuine street address. Just dream up your Mickey Mouse brand and a cool Trademe name and you're off. Laptop in bedroom leads to money in bank.
The prime example is the curved glass canopy.
There’s nothing wrong with a good curved glass canopy that is supported by a reputable importer (such as Parmco for instance). However, the popularity of this style made it an obvious target for boys after a quick buck. So many have been sold out of the backs of containers lately that this popular style has almost become a Kiwi cliche. Curved glass canopy - world famous in NZ.
I will qualify this by pointing out that not all sellers of cheaper curved glass canopies (or any other style for that matter) are dodgy. Nor that it is purely an Asian phenomenon, though they tend to be made there of course. The unfortunate fact is that the dodgy few give the respectable importers a bad name. Do your research, check out the brand, find the dealer’s business address and don't get caught out.
